People are considered number one subject for photographs. From party photographs to photos of wedding and travel shots, thousands or even more photographs are taken every single day of the year. Portrait photography, on the other hand, is a bit different from that general photography. The main aim of portrait photography is to display and capture something of the essence of a person; something about their feelings, personality, character, attitude or life.

It is absolutely not possible for the portrait photographers to click different photographs in the same mode. People often struggle to understand the correct settings which can assist them in the best portrait photography. DSLR these days have eased the stress of photographers in various ways as there are quite a few pre-built portrait photography settings which can help them to capture great shots. However, the pre-built settings won’t help you all the time and you need to move on from these tweaks.

So, to make portrait photography a little easier for you, here is a list of various tips and tricks that you can follow to understand the tactics of portrait photography in a better way.

Some easy tips and tricks to overcome difficulties of portrait photography

1. Camera settings:

Taking portrait photographs is all about a person’s face. Basic portrait photography settings seek to eliminate anything that is distracting from the background of the shot. The best way to achieve a disturbance-free portrait photo is to use a wide aperture, as wide as possible. Wide apertures make a shallow depth of field that renders anything far from the best focus.

Other than the aperture, another important camera setting is the ISO. The ISO should always be as low as possible, as higher ISO can result in digital noise that will look ugly in the portrait.

2. Lighting:

Lighting in portrait photography can be as complicated and confusing as the settings. Professional portrait photography is always done in studios where the lighting can be easily controlled. But, if you are not a professional photographer then it might be a tough task for you to control the lights.

So, for an efficient portrait photograph result, first of all, position your subject or model at a window or a place where there is natural light. The light coming through the window should be bright enough but not direct. Light from the window will easily light up the side of the model’s face that is closest to it.

Then, place something at the other side of the model so that the reflected light from the window will bounce onto the other side of their face. For this, you can simply use a white cardboard or even a sheet of aluminum.

3. Communicating with the subject:

Another important factor to remember when doing portrait photography is to interact with your subject. Unless you are shooting with professional models, the toughest thing about taking portrait images is not, in fact, lighting and camera settings, but ensuring that your subject is comfortable enough to give you amazing results.

So, these are some of the important things that you should surely remember while doing portrait photography. These tips will help you to capture amazing portrait photos and you’ll get efficient portrait photography results.
